Reading First

The big ideas in Reading First are:

· Five components of reading

· Systematic and explicit instruction

· Reading as a school-wide endeavor

The five major reading skills are:

-Phonemic awareness

-Phonics

-Fluency

-Vocabulary

-Comprehension

Systematic instruction is carefully planned in sequence, like a blueprint for a house.

To facilitate our school-wide endeavor to improve reading skills for all students and to meet the NCLB goal of all third graders reading at or above grade level by 2007-2008, our school schedule has Reading Block time every morning.  The K-3 block is from 9:15-10:45, the Grade 4-5 block is from 9:15-10:30.  No interruptions is the policy for these blocks.  Please help us by not asking for a visit or to see a student during those times.
